A Song For You – Amber & Gold

A song for Moses, who died on December 29th, 2012 on the kitchen floor; three long breaths and then he was done.

Amber and Gold
Trace my chest, find the fault-line in my heart
Got smoke in my hair and there’s a hole in the sky
Close my eyes, I can’t see you anymore
You don’t live here anymore, and I don’t know what I will do
All I’ve got is the song in my throat
And the clothes on my back
And the love in my two cupped hands

And all I need is for you to meet my eyes
Yours are amber and gold,
Mine are brown like the dirt that we sit on
In the night, in the cold, in our last hours

I won’t stop til you breathe your final breath
Til I lay you in the ground, throw the flowers on your chest
And we will sing in those silent winter months
In the damp cold that leeches the color from our bones
And you will grow til you’re bigger than before
Til you’re bigger than the house
Til you’re everywhere at once

And all I need is for you to meet my eyes
Yours are amber and gold,
Mine are brown like the dirt that we sit on
In the night, in the cold, in our last hours
